Destricted: But is it Porn?
Pretentious porn film gets anal-yzed By Alexander Zaitchik Browse author Email

The best contribution is Marco Brambilla’s dazzling “Sync,” a masterfully edited montage of dark-lit sex acts and facial money shots that has the virtue of extreme brevity, which viewers will appreciate after being subjected to the film’s tortuously long duds, like Richard Prince’s “House Call,” in which an old 70s porno is given a creepy David Lynch soundtrack. Early Kenneth Anger turned inside-out and stood on its head! Transgressive!

Destricted hits an eye-rolling low with “Onan: Death Valley,” in which a man falls to his knees and jerks off into the California desert. When he finally busts a watery nut in the sand, I joined a relieved crowd in a hearty applause.

Then there’s Gaspar Noé’s “Babysitter,” which cuts between a young girl getting head from a teddy bear to a goth industrial teenager watching a porn as he screws an inflatable doll. Noé, famous for the ultra-realistic rape scene in Irreversible, ends the film with the goth kid ramming a 9mm into the doll’s mouth, just as the teddy bear, possibly in another room in the same house, brings a teenage girl to climax.

By the time the lights came on at a recent screening, at least a third of the crowd at 35MM had walked out. Not because they were squeamish, but because most of Destricted is pompous film school bullshit that stimulates neither the mind nor the loins.
