Concert Review: Iggy and the Stooges
B1 Maximum, September 11 By Mark Ames Browse author Email

As I stood in the VIP balcony watching Iggy Pop storm onto the stage, leaping, twisting and limping like a wounded and dangerous pit bull (or in Iggian terms, "a street-walking cheetah with a hide full of napalm"), I thought to myself, "Goddamnit, I really have been lied to!" Fact: Iggy Pop is 60 fucking years old, putting him just past the average life expectancy for a Russian male. Fact: Iggy Pop has injected more hard drugs into his veins than the entire Vietnam Veterans of America organization combined, only saved from death and mental institutions by the intervention of fellow drug addict David Bowie. Fact: at the concert last week, Iggy was sprinting, bending, screaming, and full-on stage-diving with more vigor and limber than any 22-year-old skate rat I’ve ever seen. Myth: It is said that if you take lots of hard drugs, your mind and body will be destroyed, and you’ll wind up prematurely decrepit and dead. After seeing Iggy, I typed a note into my cellphone: "anti-opiate tales are the opiates of the masses." I’ll tell you what kills people: that filthy peasant drug, alcohol. That and working an office job. Folks, you’ve been had, bamboozled, etc, once again.

As for The Stooges, they provided the closest musical equivalent to smoking West Coast crystal imaginable, as raw and powerful as rock could hope to be, thanks in no small part to ex-Minuteman Mike Watts on the bass, lurched low against his massive bass amp.

Speaking of raw, the only complaint I have is that they didn’t play a single goddamn song from Raw Power, the meanest rock record in history, and the greatest piece of fascist art to ever come out of the New World. (Although Iggy is more an anarchist than left/right, he did cause controversy a few months ago when he complained on BBC about all the "paki stores" he had to visit.) In the late 60 and early 70s, Iggy preached pure naive violence and war at exactly the most dangerous time to say that, the height of the hippie peace-and-love revolution, and the defeat in Vietnam. In 1973, the year America officially lost the Vietnam War, Iggy proudly seized the worst and most deadly words from that war—napalm and "search and destroy" missions, responsible for the slaughter of untold thousands of women and children—to boast about his "hide full of napalm" and how he’s "The world’s forgotten boy/The one who searches only to destroy."

The Life Lesson from the Iggy concert: lead a life combining equal overdoses of hard drugs and serious physical exercise, and ye shall live to a ripe, happy old age.
