Bye-Bye, Miss Russian Pie
The Ofis is now closed forever By Nancy Deal Browse author

"Well!" She pauses, confused. "Nikita! I don't know what to do! I can't sign off that she has resigned without signing that I have returned her work booklet to her! And she doesn't have a work booklet!"

It appears we have reached an impasse.

Nikita has two working brain cells, however, and he decides to fill out and issue me a brand new work booklet so that I can properly quit my job in full compliance with current Russian federal legislation and labor regulations. It takes them 20 minutes to write three pages of fancy, unintelligible Russian cursive and enter an unspecified number of stamps in various places. Then I can go to my next stop.

But the remaining doors are closed. Locked shut. I run back up to our office. It is 7 p.m.

"Yulia! I couldn't get all of the signatures. Some people went home. What should I do? Can you just get the rest for me next week?"

"Well...let me check." She picks up the phone, explains my situation, and then says "da" a lot while nodding. Then she hangs up, looks at me, and says:

"Nyet. You have to come back here sometime next week."

Kolya has been standing in the doorway this whole time, listening. "How about you come in and finish up next Wednesday, Nancy? Then you can stay a few hours for the meeting. OK, great--see you then! Eight o'clock sharp! Have a great weekend!"
