The Pankisi Whore

And Patrick Tyler, Brave Sir Patrick, cleared the way for all those daring datelines.

Folks, do you smell a rat too, or is it just me?

How the hell can the Pankisi Gorge be so extremely dangerous to Western civilization, so perilous in its threat to mankind that we even risked breaking with ally Russia in order to get our troops in there... if every khaki-slacks Patrick, Jill and Alice can go prancing around the villages nagging the local hicks with the same set of questions... "Have you seen any terrorists? No? You sure? Not just one? Half a one? Here, here's a mini-pack of pizza-flavored Pringles... now is your memory coming back? There's more where that came from, if you can just give me a turban or two." Those were a lot of fine heathen heads that the Al Qaeda let slip in and out still attached to their heathen bodies, all of it unaccompanied by security -- a fact which leaves me highly suspicious at the least. Is the American War Machine really gearing up for a fight in the Pankisi Gorge against international terrorism? Or have they come to prop up another desperate regime in order to secure larger, sleazier, more familiar interests?

While Pasha was overjoyed about the American military coming into Georgia, he couldn't help but be pessimistic about the mid- and long-term prospects. "Russia will always behave like an imperial power," he said. "They'll never give up this land. What will America do when it comes down to it, fight World War Three to protect Georgia? I don't think so."

No, not to protect Georgia, that's true. But to protect oil, all that oil, you betcha World War Three's not only possible, but almost certain. In fact, it's already happening, as the war shifts from self-preservation to acquisition and expansion. Oil is as good a reason as any to go to war over. Don't believe? Just ask Dubya's dad, he'll tell ya.
