The Ugly Truth
The Decline and Fall of Moscow's Dyevushki By Mark Ames Browse author Email

Karel, whose club hosts the popular Thursday night raves, compared the girls of today unfavorably to the legendary raver girls who frequented the now-defunct Ptyutch nightclub from the mid-1990s. "At Ptyutch, all the girls were thin and beautiful and happy. They were all on drugs and having a good time. The girls who come here on Thursday nights look like they have too much homework to deal with. It's been improving over the past few weeks but it's not Ptyutch."

Indeed, patrons to the Thursday night legend, Propaganda, agree.

"I won't even go to Propaganda anymore," said "Brad." "They look more like Western students and they act like them too."

"They're not drunk anymore like they used to be," said another eXpat who didn't give his name. "It's a lot more work and you get a lot less, maybe just a phone number. Do I want to call them back? No. What's the point? I'll just have to spend money at a restaurant, where they'll stuff themselves and get fatter, and then it's not even worth it trying to fuck them. It's not like in the 90s when they were always drunk and always ready to go home with you after 5 minutes. All you had to do was buy them a beer or pay for their taxi ride. Now they're boring."

eXile Phone Call to ZAGS in the Akademichskii Rayon

  • eXile: Hello, I'm a reporter from the eXile, an English-language newspaper here.
  • ZAGS: What do you want?!
  • eXile: We were wondering why Moscow's girls have become less attractive over the last couple of years. (Pause, sound of annoyed breathing.) Um, maybe it's because of McDonald's, too much fast food?
  • ZAGS: Why are you asking me this question?
  • eXile: Well, you're in a position to see all the brides that come into your offices, into ZAGS. You must have noticed that they're not as pretty as they used to be...
  • ZAGS: No comment! (hangs up)
