Death Porn: DP Potpourri
Who’s getting killed, and how?

This is another astounding case of a Death Porn that shows how much things are improving in Russia. The militsia can kill as much as they want, but they're no longer immune from the rule of law. This story, reported by Interfax, had it's beginnings during Christmas two years ago. The wire report was, as always, short on the details, but here is what we could glean: A well-to-do manager of what seems like Caucasian origin was spending the evening home alone when a three assailants burst through the door and attacked the jeweler with a heavy blunt object, dispensing with him with a few well-placed blows to the skull. It wasn't personal--they just wanted the pile of jewelry he kept stashed in his apartment. After they found what they were looking for, the three men fled. That's about as much as the police could determine. And that's the state in which the case remained for two long years. Then, a few weeks ago, police stumbled upon one of the people involved in the crime. It's not clear how the police got him to admit it, as they weren't really looking for him. But seeing how he was picked up in a less than sober state, we're guessing it was the vodka that loosened up his tongue. The rest was probably done with a good dose of beating. And that's how the cops were led to their fellow officer stationed in Moscow's southeastern region. He organized the murder/theft, which netted the band 150,000 rubles (about $6,000). Maybe the jeweler wasn't so well-to-do, after all. Judging by the measly sum, he probably owned a silver jewelry stall at a local rynok.

It's good to know that no matter how much things change, they always stay the same. While police work in and around Moscow seems to be steadily getting more professional, in the provinces the militsia is still enjoying the good ol' days. On the night of September 29, a 40-year-old police officer named Romanov from the Siberian town of Kemervo got off his shift and decided to booze it up with his buddies before driving home. On his way home, Romanov became enraged when a Toyota sedan overtook and passed his late-model Zhiguli. Deciding to teach the other guy a lesson, Romanov caught up with the Toyota and forced it to a halt. He got out of his car, drew his gun and fired directly into the driver's head, assassin style. Romanov's police training didn't go to waste, and he managed to score a direct hit: one bullet to the head. Romanov was too drunk to bother with a control shot. Instead, he got into his car and resumed his ride home. But he didn't make it far. The roads were dark and barren and the booze started to make him sleepy. He passed out as he approached an intersection and plowed through two teenage girls waiting to cross the street. One was 16, the other 17. Both died before the ambulance arrived. Romanov didn't attempt to flee the scene. Not because of his conscience, but because he was passed out cold at the wheel. Romabov is charged with attempted murder and automotive manslaughter. He's looking at least 15 years behind bars.

But the story doesn't end there. Kemerovo's governor used this influence to make a televised plea to the to Russia's Prosecutor General's office, saying that the situation in Kemerovo's police force was completely out of control. By the governor's own admission, the regional militsia is nothing more than a armed band of vigilantes backing up local organized crime. He hopes the federal powers hear his plea for help.

The Death Porn Bureau has mentioned this before, but we're gonna say it again: This year, the number of child murders has tripled all across Russia, and the wave isn't showing the slightest sign of abating.

The latest brutal murder of the underage occurred in the small town of Tolyatti, which sits on the Volga River in the Samara region. On the morning of September 20, the bodies of two young girls, aged 15 and 16, were found dead on an isolated bank of the Volga. They were hogtied and bound together, both had plastic bags wrapped around their heads. The cause of death has not yet been determined, but both girls were sliced up and had multiple stab wounds on their bodies. For some reason the killers fled the scene before they could finish the job. From the looks of it, they wanted to sink the evidence. One of the two girls had a large stone tied to her body. The girls, whose names aren't being released, went missing about a week ago. The circumstances surrounding their disappearance aren't clear, but it is known that the two were friends.
