Social Awkwardness Among the Red Flags
By John Dolan Browse author Email
The only time we got any volume going was when a speaker led the crowd in chants, surprisingly familiar Berkeley-style chants: "No war!" "Hands off Iraq!" The signs people carried were more interesting: "If war starts, we're with Iraq"-a fine promise by an oldish lady. Lots of "Hands off the KNDP (North Korea)." along with a half-dozen North Korean flags. There were a few Iraqi flags as well, and one that was either Puerto Rico or Cuba.

Katherine and I were pushed by the crowd into a guy selling Zavtra, who asked us if we wanted a copy. When Katherine shook her head, he looked at her more closely and said to the guy next to him-another short, sturdy sixty-something in a fur hat-"She's not one of us." ("Nii nasha.") Sure, that's the idiomatic way to say that someone's a foreigner, but it sounded very literal. We weren't one of theirs. We were just visiting, and freezing to death.

We fled. Couldn't even make it to the Metro. The cold drove us into a Starbucks-style coffee place with 47 kinds of caffeine. It was nice and hot in there, and as we thawed, we saw the demonstrators marching homeward: groups of short and sturdy people with red flags over their shoulders. It was touching, if you didn't get too close.
