Sky Captain And The World Of Tomorrow

What They Say: Proactive German scientist builds doomsday machine to cleanse the world of humanity's sins. For nearly 30 years after said German's disappearance from the international scene in 1918, giant robots execute tactical theft operations, much to the chagrin of Sky Captain and his team of fellow adventurers who must all work together to find the source of these disturbances.

What We Say: Neo-retro art direction tips a fedora hat to 1950's science fiction/detective aesthetic and plot. The nonstop pop culture assault should make any male who grew up in North America with too much trivial time on his hands snicker. Evil professor spending 30 years building a doomsday device is less impressive nowadays, given that anyone with a Cyprus bank account can purchase a nuke from the Russians at cut-rate prices. Angelina Jolie made us cross our legs and pull out our shirts to let them "breathe."

The Lowdown: Metropolis meets The Hudsucker Proxy.

Best Bit: Law knocks out Paltrow.You're supposed to think he did it to stop her from following him to certain doom, but it came across more like a classic bitch slap.

Starring: Jude Law, Gwynnith Paltrow, Angelina Jolie, robots.

Rating:: 3*

Playing: American House of Cinema, October 14.

Anchorman: The Legend Of Ron Burgundy

What They Say: Tongue in cheek regaling of a 1970's-era San Francisco news anchorman's struggle to maintain a swinger lifestyle with the onset of political correctness. Ferrell, who for years read channel 4's news as the lead anchor, must now compete with Applegate after network heads decide that the changing times call for the addition of a female reporter. Will he fuck her or will she fuck him? Details at 11.

What We Say: Another film trying to capitalize on 70's era humor. The 70's are so late 90's. Funny, but might have been funnier as a Saturday Night Live short sketch. The problem with most SNL comedians-turned-actors is their blanket inability to keep you interested for an entire film. It's not that they are not funny, it's just that while Letterman knows that his thing is making the same bad joke repeatedly, these people seem to be deluded into believing that their comic trick is in somehow more spherical. The weatherman from the Daily Show pulled off a good "who's on first"-style straight man routine.

The Lowdown: The Devil in Miss Jones meets WKRP.

Best Bit: Ferrell's dog speaks to the Kodiak momma bear.

Starring: Will Ferrell, Christina Applegate, Fred Willard.

Rating:: 2**

Playing: Garbushka.

The Ladykillers

What They Say: Remake of a 1950's English film where a band of amateur criminals, posing as classical musicians, rent root cellar rehearsal space from a widow whose home is easy tunneling distance from a riverboat casino's nightly takings repository. Done by the Coen brothers, the film combines exaggerated small town personalities, together with the Coen's recurring odd obsession with the number three, to produce a film that should probably be watched a few times in order to feign one's way through a cocktail party conversation.

What We Say: Unfortunate-ly, the film offers little to inspire a second screening. The effort reminded us more of Moby's recent "discovery" of Delta gospel music than it did of the Coen's previous brilliant roster. Has The Passion affected the Jewish muse so negatively? Mel Gibson must be made to pay for this. Nail 'im up, we say!

The Lowdown: Ocean's 11 meets Mississippi Burning.
