The Virtual Presidential Candidate
Yasha Levine ( Email ) on February 11, 2008

Bogdanov: presidential candidate or used car salesman?

With Mikhail Kasyanov's presidential bid killed off earlier this week, it's time to take a look at the the official list of presidential candidates.

The elections are now limited to just four candidates: Putin-successor Medvedev, LDPR's Zhirinovsky, Commie dinosaur Zyuganov, and greasy-haired political unknown Andrei Bogdanov.

You're probably asking yourself "Who's this Bogdanov character?"

Well, Bogdanov and his Democratic Party of Russia (DPR) haven't been covered much by the media until he started registering for the presidential race, but in the political arena it's an open secret that the party is just another Kremlin project. With Kasyanov out of the race, Bogdanov has become the elections' only "independent" option, and he just happens to be a fake liberal to boot, pushing a pro-EU platform.

While the quasi-left Just Russia project was created last year to steal votes from the Communist Party, the DPR's goal is to fragment the liberal votes which might otherwise have gone to Union of Right Forces, or SPS and Yabloko, or to the liberal candidate--in this case Kasyanov.

The Bogdanov candidacy is also a kind of insurance policy taken out by the Kremlin to ensure that, if Zyuganov withdraws from the race in protest, elections will still proceed with a veneer of choice between the supposed-ultranationalist Zhirinovsky and supposed-liberal Bogdanov. And judging by his DPR party's two main platformss—Russian joining the EU and getting NATO protection to save Russia from a Chinese invasion in the east—Bogdanov is the candidate with the single highest probability of losing.

To read more about this Bogdanov and his Democratic Party of Russia go: here.

Late Note: A criminal case has been opened up in the Yaroslavl region against Bogdanov's campaign for supposedly collecting false signatures for his candidacy. However, as Novaya Izvestia writes, this isn't going to stop his candidacy from going ahead, unlike Kasyanov's.
